Rani Mukherjee was immersed in film from an early age, with her father, Ram Mukherjee, being a former director and a founder of Filmalaya Studios and her mother being a singer. Raja Mukherjee, her brother, is a film director and producer and her aunt is a nationall rexognized Bengali actress. Rani was trained in Odissi dance from an early age and pursued an education at Mithibai College, Mumbai. Her first appearance in film was in her father's movie Biyer Phool, but it was not until her role as a rape victim in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat that she got recognition for her work. Nevertheless, the film failed, and she returned to finish school. A couple of years later, she starred in the films Aati Kya Khandala and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, both of which were very successful, with the latter winning her a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. In recent years, Rani has gotten rave reviews for her films Yuva, Chalte Chalte, and Veer-Zaara.
